Editors -there are many articles, lessons, and reviews abut editors. They can be miracle workers with your writing or a nightmare of wasted money. In my amazing writing group we discussed different types of editors and different pay structures. As we discussed whether we thought an editor would work on a commission of books sold basis, Victorine Lieske mentioned a proof reading editor who charges a straight $20.00 reading fee then charges a small amount per error found. We all agreed that this was brilliant. The more work she does, the more money she makes. The author saves money if they can send a clean manuscript and benefits from a motivated editor who wants to find every error possible to make money.
Here's the fascinating part of our conversation: Someone asked, if you already paid for an editor and hired the proofreader to find the last few mistakes, should the first editor refund their fee if the proofreader found an excessive number of mistakes remaining?
I'm curious what you think.
